My wife and I are planning a trip to Boston this summer and we are going to catch a Red Sox game. Ive never been to Boston or Fenway Park and Im not sure what to expect. So I need your help... I plan on buying tickets before we leave but what is a good section to sit in for a newbie to Fenway? Dont want to spend my whole life savings but willing to spend. What are somethings I need to check out before, during and after the game? No matter where I sit, will I have access to the whole park to take everything in? I know the stadium is old, how are the seats, small and old or have they updated? How is the view from the outfield bleacher area? Im very excited about this trip and seeing such an historic park. I have many questions but cant think of them all right now, so any comments, concerns, assistance would very much be appreciated!!!!

I'll second Bob's advice on seating at Fenway. Anything labeled 'grandstand' is an old wooden bench seat that will make you wish to be in the SRO section. The bleacher seats have actually been upgraded, so they're much more comfortable - still a little cramped, especially if you want to compare them to a place like PNC Park... But, the bleachers put you really far away from the action (hard to do at Fenway), unless you can get in the first couple of rows behind the bullpens, which can be fun - see 2003 ALCS Yankees Bullpen v. Sox Groundscrew. Even then, there's a sizeable pathway between you and the bullpen.

My favorite seats are in the right field box, right by the Pesky Pole. This section designation includes a wide range of seats, though, so take a look on the Red Sox web site at the seating chart. The wall down the right field line is so low and so close to the field you can hear JD Drew's joints creaking.

Thanks Bob... we are planning our trip for the week of June 14th. So we will be catching a week day game. I have been looking at redsox.com for tickets, but not sure where we will be sitting. Im a little disappointed that they will be playing Arizona, would like to see another American League team, but Ill take what I can get. We are also thinking about taking a tour of the park earlier in the day just to take in as much as we can. How is that? Im sure its pretty good. Ill be sure to check those places out that you mentioned. We will probably be in town for a few days, so if you can think of anything else that us out-of-towners need to check out dont hesitate to tell.

Hi,

I live in Boston so I can answer some of your questions. As for tickets are you going to a weekend or weekday game - big difference in price. Weekday games you can still get tickets online at redsox.com. I personally like sitting in the Pavilion Box seats - they are in the upper deck and have more leg room. The seats in the grandstand and bleachers are old and you have no room at all. Plus many of these seats in those sections do not face home plate. At Fenway you have access to the entire park so you can take it all in. Other things to do before or after the game is head to McGreavy's Pub - it is owned by a few members of the Dropkick Murphy's. Lot of really cool memorablia in there. Cask n Flagon is another pub to get to - it's right next to Fenway. Let me know when you are heading Fenway - if I am in town then maybe we could meet for a beer or 3. Plus I have a membership to the Red Sox nation which allows access to the Monster for batting practice.

Bob
