On our first trip to Chicago, we stayed in a downtown hotel on the Miracle Mile. It was convenient location in the center of things, easy access to public transportation and getting to the Wrigley Field on the "L" was easy. If you are renting a car, you can park it at the airport where it is cheaper and use public transportation if you don't want to drive in city Uber is another cheap and easy option. If you have a car, you will want to drive to the White Sox ballpark because it is easy access off the Interstate and there's not much to do in the vicinity. You will want to drive to the ballparks in KC and St. Louis. Good tailgating in the parking lot at KC and bars for post game refreshments in walking distance of Busch Stadium. Must sees in KC are the Negro League Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum on 18th and Vine and a visit to Arthur Bryant's World Famous BBQ a couple blocks away. The history museum under the Great Arch is also worth a stop before the game.
If you are flying into O'hare, the Sheraton at the airport is nice and affordable. You will be a good ways from Wrigley but not too far from Guaranteed Rate.
