Thanks for posting this Ken. Field of Dreams is certainly my all time favorite baseball movie! I hadn't heard about this and I am bummed that I never went before the sale. I have a feeling that the next owner will alter the original site...hopefully not. What did you think of it when you visited?

I've been to the Field of Dreams several times and I love it! There's also an awesome Basilica (St. Francis Xavier) in Dyersville ... and I think a farm toy museum as well. (Okay, I'm not Ken, but there you have it.)

Hey Craig! I have been to the FOD 2x since 2002. One trip was just to go there, with a few games and other things thrown in, with my buddy Bob. At that point I had never been to Disneyland, but I equated it to DL in the respect that it was "The Happiest Place On Earth". There were a lot of people there, yet everyone got a long and everyone had a great time. We all took turns in rotation playing the field and batting. It was pretty cool. The first trip Bob and I went to the Field 2 days in a row. Was amazing to see that each day it was the same thing, no complaining, nobody batting longer than they should to allow others to enjoy it. Bob and I still talk about how much fun it was to just be out in the outfield, near the corn, playing catch for a couple hours while watching everything going on. Peaceful for sure.
In 2003 when I was there with my nephew as the first main stop on our big baseball road trip, there was hardly anyone there. At one point it was just me and Sean. It was quite the different experience, but still very cool. Sean hit at least 1 into the corn that trip... I wasn't even close :)
On my first trip I bought a souvenir bat that has the FOD logo on it and used it at the field those 2 days. I brought it with me in 2003 and used it again and it's never been used since. It's sitting nicely in my display case with a few other souvenir bats I have got from different places.

I flew into Chicago, caught a White Sox game (Cubs were on the road), then we drove the 3 hours+ over to Dubuque. You could fly into ORD in Chicago or MKE in Milwaukee, they are both right at 3 1/2 hrs from Dyersville. Madison, WI is only 2 hours and 20 away. Des Moines, IA is 2 hours and 53 mins. So you have options, but obviously for the best Baseball Trip, you're gonna wanna do Chicago (dont miss Piaza DiMaggio if you haven't already been), or at least Milwaukee... or like we did, fly into Chicago, catch a game, over to Dysersville, then to Milwaukee for a game before driving back to and flying outta Chicago :) If you do that, Chicago, Milwaukee, Chicago, let me suggest a quick stop in Lake Geneva, WI... not only is it beautiful there, but there is an arcade in town that has some awesome 1980's full size video games... :)

P.S... Hey Steph! I went to the Farm Toy Museum, was pretty cool :) Galena, which is not that far from Dyersville is where President Grant was living when he was elected, or as he told his wife Julia as he walked up his front steps the morning after election day, "I'm afraid I have been elected President". There is also a Statue of Grant in the park in town that has the name "John Kinsella" on it... which we all know is Ray's dad's name from the movie FOD. :) The movie theater in Dubuque is where they world premiered FOD (it still has bright orange shag carpet!). Caught a movie there as well, "Signs", talk about freaky walking outta that movie and seeing nothing but corn!! :)
It makes for a great trip, with so much to see and do related to historical things, or to the movie, in such a small area. I hope to get back there again the next time I make it to Chicago. :)

Ken -- awesome photos -- thanks for posting. I agree that Galena is a great town to visit for both history buffs and those who delight in shopping and/or dining.
As an unofficial member of the Minnesota tourism bureau, let me also suggest that this area can be reached easily from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, should you be there for a game at the new Target Field. There's a beautiful, scenic drive along the Mississippi that will take you to Dubuque in about 5 hours (perhaps less time if you drive more aggressively than I do).
Whichever way you decide to get there, Dyersville is worth the trip!
